Vocational courses provide a blend of classroom tuition mixed with practical, hands-on learning and work experience. They are available in Levels 1 to 3 and include BTECs and T Levels. They are ideal if you prefer the practical elements of learning as, not only will you learn in the classroom, you will also spend a lot of your time in the workshop, studio, salon or gym to experience the real-life working environment.


Vocational courses provide a well-rounded qualification that gives you both the knowledge and the employability skills needed to get you noticed after you leave college, whether you decide to move on to university, an apprenticeship or go straight into employment.


You can study a vocational course in a range of subjects from plumbing to childcare, and engineering to business. Level 1 and 2 courses last for one year and you can usually progress onto a higher level upon completion; Level 3 courses usually run for two years and are equivalent to three A Levels. They include T Levels and BTEC qualifications.

BTECS and T Levels can be graded Pass (P), Merit (M), Distinction (D) or Distinction-star (D*). Some vocational courses may be graded with double or triple grades, for example, D*D* or D*D*D*
